US Military Conducts Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
According to a senior defense spokesperson, the American military executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Prior Actions
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Actions Amidst Pressure
The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official seemed to confirm a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
