The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in 25 Years.

After a quarter-century span, every region of the state is facing water scarcity. This landmark event follows difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified blaze threats and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Shows No Abnormally Dry Areas

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is without drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that topped up water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, leading to extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January finally erased those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

But, authorities caution that the end of drought status is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the high-elevation snow place it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for future water availability. Water officials point out that it is premature to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance during the months to come.
