Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
