A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
