“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
