A Prediction Market User Profited $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers on Maduro's Downfall.
A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Predictions
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.
One account, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before News Break
Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity just before the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on inside information," stated an industry expert.
A small number of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
